How Search Engines Work to Rank Your Website

The use of the internet these days is largely dependent on search engines. These are the most often used method of finding websites and any other information you want to find. Why? It’s really no mystery; a search engine provides the quickest way to find what you’re looking for online. You need to understand how search engines work and why they’re so important. Here’s a quick rundown on the things you need to know about search engines.

A search engine uses what is known as a spider or crawler (it has lots of them) which prowl the internet looking through websites and analyzing their content. When a new website is submitted to search engines, these engines will send out their spiders to check the site out. The content of the site is looked at, as is the content of any site yours is linked to. All of this data goes to a central databank where it is indexed. Spiders check back with pages frequently and will be re-indexed if there have been updates to the site.

Another thing that websites do is to rank websites, along with sites linked to them. Every search engine has a different set of standards which it uses to determine ranking.

When you perform a search using Google or some other search engine, what happens is this - the search engine will give you results which are not actually real time results, but rather the results of its own rankings. Since each engine uses different criteria to rank pages, a search for “birdhouses” on Google will yield a different set of results than will the same search on Yahoo. The results are dependent on the engine’s ranking system.

So what does this mean for you as a web based marketer? Search engines are vital to the success of your website. For instance, when someone searches a topic, they usually only look at the first page of results. Perhaps they will look at the second - but for each page after the first that your site shows up on, the odds of anyone going to your site drop dramatically.

Understanding keywords is so important to your business. You need to find relevant keywords which are searched for often but for which there is little competition (this will give you a better rate on these in a pay-per-click campaign). Used properly, you can use these words to get higher search engine rankings.

Being savvy about how search engines work can make all the difference to your online marketing business. Your site can be ranked on the first page of results, which is where it needs to be to thrive.
